modern healthcareWhy is there so much crazy in the world of medical records, I ask?

"Lawsuit alleges patient was charged $2,694 for release of medical records.....more here"

Those rates do sound excessive. Having worked in ROI before as part of my duties in Health Records, I recall fees of $30 for a personal request for information. This included 10 copies. Other copies were 50 cents each. For lawyers and insurance company requests, the hospital charged $100. That included 10 copies. Additional copies were 50 cents each. If the information request was relating to records on microfilm, there was a $100 fee for that plus copy fees. We had a horrible system for printing copies from microfilm that was a tedious and frustrating process with equipment that was not in proper working order.

I for one look forward to the day we have access to our health information through a patient portal. This is available in some areas. The patient portal may not be useful for older information, though.
